st thomas' | garden of remembrance

Our quiet Garden of Remembrance provides a place where local people can remember their loved ones. Cremated remains are buried in the lawn area in the garden. Memorial plaques bearing the names of individuals are mounted on the brick memorial wall alongside the path. Vases at the base of the wall provide a place where floral tributes can be left.

Burial of Ashes

Ashes are buried in individual, unmarked plots in the lawn area. Records are kept as to where in the garden each burial takes place.

When you apply to have ashes buried in the garden, we will arrange a mutually convenient time for a short ‘burial of ashes’ ceremony to take place, conducted by the vicar. Before the ceremony, we will prepare the plot. During the short, Christian ceremony, the ashes will be ‘loose poured’ into the plot. Following the ceremony, the plot will be filled in and the turf replaced over it.

It is not possible to scatter ashes in the garden or in the wider churchyard: they must be buried. Ashes must be loose and will not be buried in a casket.

Memorial Plaques

All burials will be recorded in the garden’s burial register which is kept securely in the church, and which can be inspected by arrangement.

If you would like a memorial to your loved one in the garden itself, a memorial plaque may be purchased through the church, which will be mounted on the memorial wall within the garden of remembrance. The grey granite plaque with embossed lettering will be of fixed size and design and will be inscribed with the name of the deceased, the years of their birth and death and a short personal message.

There will be no memorials marking the plots themselves and the lawn area will be kept clear.

Floral tributes may be placed in the vases supplied along the memorial wall. There are 15 vases available. The vases will be checked regularly and dead flowers will be removed.

In order to keep the garden tidy and a pleasant place to sit and remember loved ones, no artificial flowers or other tributes are permitted in the Garden of Remembrance and will be removed.

Please remove all cellophane, bows and other rubbish from the garden and either place in the bins provided in the car park or take home with you.
